FAQs:
Both ratings provide the same protection against windblown dust, rain, and hose-directed water. The “X” specifically indicates corrosion resistance. While a NEMA 4 enclosure is watertight and dust-tight, a NEMA 4X enclosure must also pass additional testing (such as salt spray) to ensure it survives in corrosive environments like chemical plants or coastal areas.
Yes. Both NEMA 4 and 4X are designed for both indoor and outdoor use. They are the industry standard for “washdown” environments—such as food processing plants—where equipment is cleaned with high-pressure hoses, as well as outdoor locations subject to rain, snow, and external ice formation.
While stainless steel is a traditional NEMA 4X choice, Fibox’s high-impact polycarbonate offers several distinct advantages:
- RF Transparency: Unlike metal, it allows Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals to pass through.
- Easier Customization: It can be drilled or cut on-site without creating jagged, rust-prone edges.
- Weight & Cost: Polycarbonate is significantly lighter and generally more cost-effective than stainless steel, while still offering superior impact resistance.
No. While NEMA 4 and 4X are watertight against splashing and powerful hose-directed streams, they are not rated for prolonged submersion. If your application requires the enclosure to be underwater, you would need a NEMA 6 or 6P (IP68) rated enclosure.
A NEMA 4X rating is often considered more rigorous than IP66. While both protect against dust and powerful water jets, NEMA 4X includes additional requirements for corrosion resistance and resistance to ice formation, which are not covered by the IP (Ingress Protection) system.
Not necessarily. The NEMA 4X rating primarily indicates that the enclosure is watertight and corrosion-resistant. However, all Fibox NEMA 4X enclosures are manufactured from high-grade, UV-stabilized polycarbonate. This material is engineered to pass rigorous UL 746C weathering tests, ensuring the box won’t become brittle or yellow, even after years in direct sunlight.
Only if you use the correct accessories. To maintain NEMA 4 or 4X integrity after modification, you must use accessories with an equivalent or higher rating. Fibox offers an extensive line of cable management systems—including cable glands, membrane glands, and flanges—specifically designed with high IP ratings (up to IP68) to ensure your enclosure remains sealed and protected.
No. Fibox NEMA 4X enclosures are designed for superior environmental protection against water, dust, and corrosion. However, we do not offer ATEX, Class I Division 2, or other explosion-proof rated enclosures. For hazardous locations where combustible gases or dust are present, specialized housing certified for those specific environments is required.
